The measure of all our challenges with respect to the environment, the economy and government services is sustainability. We are not on a sustainable path and we need to change direction now. We need strong, demonstrated leadership able to push the agenda and build consensus with equitable solutions.

Campaign Theme Song
Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.
Words and music: Bob Dylan

WHAT TOM WILL DO

Government Services:
We are in a recession; we need a temporary freeze on County salaries and benefits to avoid layoffs and cuts in essential services.

We must encourage creative and innovative solutions. More attention to crime reduction with proactive measures, along with improving our roads and infrastructure.

We must increase funds to our struggling non-profits and volunteer organizations. More attention to our healthcare, more fairness to our in home support services and less neglect of the needs of our seniors.

The Economy:

We need improved communication with broadband internet and cell phone reception. Encourage home based cottage industry in the virtual economy.

We need to create more affordable housing opportunities young families working in our communities and the retirees wishing to remain.

We need to support local agriculture, tourism and job creation. Increased funding for better schools and a wiser more fair use of the TOT (bed tax).

The Environment:

We need to fund non-profit efforts to reduce green house gases through “renew-reuse-recycle”. Encourage local “carbon offset projects.”

We need to assist the creation of “green collar jobs” increasing conservation, solar energy and local sustainable agriculture. Dollars that stay in our local economy create 2-7 times their value.

We need a comprehensive water management plan along with innovative solutions to our wastewater, refuse and resource issues. We need to encourage clean biomass energy creation.
